Snowshoeing Hurricane Mountain
-By Kyla Brustin
Last Saturday morning as many people got up and rushed to the slopes to ski, Josh and I started the day slowly, watching the snow falling heavily from our living room window. Not wanting to deal with lift lines at Cranmore, Attitash or Wildcat, we considered how we would take advantage of this bounty. After some debate we settled on an activity that we knew would be good not only for us but also for our German Shepherd, Lucy. There’s something very cool about watching a dog burrowing a tunnel through two feet of fresh snow, so we put on our snowshoes and headed out the back door of our house on Crown Ridge Rd in North Conway, NH. We remembered how lucky we are to have miles of trails just steps from our yard. Our path started at Kearsarge Brook, which we followed until it met up with the Red Tail Trail. From there we slowly made our way up to the top of Black Cap where incredible 360 degree views were waiting.
We often take for granted how lucky we are to be so close to the beauty of the national forest while still living in North Conway, a quaint New England village.
The hike was the perfect choice that day. And best of all, it was free!
