The best of both worlds

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Some people would call it the best of both worlds: own and enjoy your very own weekend and vacation getaway without having to pay the full costs of ownership. Many second home owners in Mount Washington Valley get a little help on their expenses by renting their properties out to short term vacationers when they are not in use. Renting your Conway, Madison, North Conway, Bartlett or Jackson home or condo can be done pretty easily and is a great way to get a little help on the bills. Depending on where you buy and how you market it, you can even earn enough to pay your taxes, condo fees, and sometimes a portion of your mortgage. (more…)

Mt Washington Valley Skiing: thinking ahead to the winter

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Open your door, put on your skis and push off. That’s all it takes from the direct trail access condos at Cranmore Mountain Ski Area in North Conway. A trail that leads to a lift to the top. Stop a moment there and take in the view. There are only a handful of ski areas in America that grow right out of their towns. Mt. Cranmore is one, and has a sweeping panorama of Mt. Washington Valley spread out before you.

Cross-country ski trails may also be at your door or nearby. But, if you don’t feel the exertion of climbing in your car is too much, the Alpine world is your ski oyster. From any of the mountain villages of Mt. Washington Valley, there’s a ski area within ten minutes: Wildcat, Black, Attitash Bear Peak, or Cranmore all have skiing from novice to expert. King Pine is in Madison and Bretton Woods is, well, in Bretton Woods. And just minutes further.

At Attitash Bear Peak Ski Area a ski to/from condo apartment building sits at a bend of Cathedral Trail just above the base station, where a choice of several lifts awaits, Higher on Cathedral are condo houses with bigger views.

Black Mountain Ski Area also has slope side condos and houses leading to gentle, pasture runs. No, there are no lodging doors to step out of at Wildcat, which is surrounded by White Mountain National Forest.  The nearest accommodations are at Dana Place, 7 minutes away. And the view of Mt. Washington and Tuckerman Ravine from any of Wildcat’s ski trails is the most spectacular of any in the East.

Bear Aware

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Wildlife abounds on Glen Ledge from moose, to deer, to bobcat,to wild turkey to that big old black bear that utilizes bird feeders as a toothpick.  Oh and his thoughts on grill covers.  Rip.   Being on the backside of Iron Mountain which is the home of the Jackson/Bartlett transfer station (town dump was the phrase in my youth) it’s only a short stroll for the bear to wend his way through neighboring yards and eventually nosing around my yard for any overlooked treats from previous visits.  He usually grunts and heads off to the brook for a drink sending various birds into a screaming frenzy as he leisurely rolls through what he thinks is his yard.  I think I’ll give him the tax bill next time he ventures through.
